The best exercise to improve your vision is simple relaxation. By relaxing your eyes, you’ll be giving your eyes a break. Eye strain is caused by eyes be overworked, such as staring at a bright monitor for hours, reading text far away, or not getting proper sleep. To relax your eyes, simple place the palms of your hands in front of your eyes and leave them there. This is called “palming.”

Palming your eyes sounds simple, but it does work. Simply closing your eyes doesn’t give them a rest. Yes, your eyes don’t necessarily get enough rest when you’re sleeping. When you’re dreaming, your eyes will often focus on what they’re “seeing”, even in dreams. Essentially, they’re focusing on the back of your eyelids while your mind is creating its own images.

For example, close your eyes and looking out your window, then turning your head to a dark area. You can definitely see the hint of light, even though your eyes are closed. By placing the palms of your hands over your eyes, you block out all light, giving your eyes the rest the need. You can do this for as little as thirty seconds or more. You can even try getting a blindfold to sleep with at night.

Eyes are meant to be on the move, and to constantly shift around to give you a better view of your environment. They can shift up to 70 times per second, without you even realizing it. This is normal behavior, it’s healthy. But your eyes do need a rest every now and then, and simply sleeping, and even palming, doesn’t always provide enough of that rest.

That’s where exercises come into play.

First, don’t stare. Staring actually hurts your eyes, as the muscles in your eyes need to be able to move and keep blood flow going. Locking your eyes into one position can tense these muscles and stop blood f low. That’s why staring hurts your eyes and they start to water, and your vision is blurred.

Instead, try blinking. Blinking normally occurs every 2 to 3 seconds, and lasts just a fraction of nanosecond. It’s enough to give your eyes a rest in the short term, so it stands to reason that a more concentrated effort of blinking can help your eyes rest.

Start blinking quickly for several seconds. You can also try squeezing your eyes shut as you blink, contorting your facial muscles into forcing your eyes shut. Maybe don’t do this in public, but in your own home blinking often and intensely can give your eyes a better rest than a long night of sleep.


Remember those breathing exercises mentioned earlier?

The brain uses more oxygen than any other part of your body. A lack of air will reduce your ability to think and see clearly. In short, our breathing patterns affect our vision, and can have a long term affect if we are not breathing properly. This is why we need to develop better breathing habits.

Start by taking in deeper breaths of air. Not so deep that you take in too much air and feel light headed, just more air than you normally breath in. Do the same for breathing out. If you do this long enough, you’ll find yourself breathing like this automatically, taking in more air and allowing more air to reach your lungs and brain.

A popular exercise is the 20/20/20 method. What that is, is every twenty minutes, focus on an object twenty feet away for twenty seconds. You’ll notice an instant improvement in your vision and focus. The more you do this, the more your eyes will get stronger, and will be able to focus better on specific objects.

A similar method for a slightly different effect is by placing your thumb in front of your face, five inches from the tip of your nose, and focusing on your thumbnail for five seconds. Whereas the 20/20/20 exercise helps your far sight, this test is designed to help your near sight, allowing you to better focus on objects that are up close.

You can also combine these two tests together, slightly altering the timing. Stare at an object that’s twenty feet away from ten seconds, then stare at your thumbnail for ten seconds, then back to the object that’s twenty feet away. By doing this for as little as a minute or as long as five, you’ll quickly develop a better sense of sight, for both objects that are far away, and readable text that’s up close.

To improve your moving sight, imagine a large figure or object lying on the ground in front of you. Now, very slowly, trace the outline of that object with your eyes as if it were really there. Stay focused on that imaginary outline, and slowly trace it for about a minute. You can also try the fence exercise. Find a fence with large slats in the middle, and focus on an object you can see on the other side of the fence. Then, continuously tilt your head back and forth along the fence, continuing to stare at the object on the other side of the fence.

These exercises are designed to improve your vision while on the go, your ability to see a moving object, and your ability to focus on something that’s moving fast and/or far away.

An exercise popular with doctors is to keep your head facing forward, and look to something off to one side of you, and focus on it for ten seconds. Then return your eyes to the center for ten seconds, then look at something on the opposite side for ten seconds, and again look to the center for ten seconds. Do this for every direction every day, and you’ll soon notice your eyes getting stronger, and your vision clearer.

By doing just these simple exercise every day, sometimes multiple times a day or even just once a day, you’ll experience a noticeable improvement in your vision on a daily basis. Both are important for each of us! Fitness can be largely influenced by time (or lack of) and convenience. One of the most common thoughts for those with time constraints is usually: I have 30 minutes to work out today. Let me knock out some cardio. This isn’t a BAD thing, but we can actually get more benefits by doing resistance training if it is done correctly. The purpose of cardio is to sustain an elevated heart rate. We can also elevate our heart rate by performing resistance training, doing calisthenics in between each exercise. Calisthenics are: jumping jacks, running or walking quickly in place, etc. Doing this as opposed to doing an exercise and resting will incorporate out “cardio” into our weight/resistance training routine.

Cheating: The Truth about much of the Fitness Industry

Everywhere you look on the shelves in magazines, or on social media, all you see are these perfect bodies- people with perfect proportion, size, abs, muscle rippedness and definition. Whether you know it or not, images such as these seep in subconsciously. In fact, that is exactly what they are meant to do- persuade, influence, advertise, and sell. And they do indeed. But is this the right perception that should be so widespread and worshiped when it comes to true health, fitness, and wellness? The players who don’t earn less, get less credit, and are not as well known.

It leads to the Ryan Braun and Lance Armstrong of the sports industries, the Mark McGuire, Barry Bonds, and others- people who shoot illegal drugs to win the award, the trophy, or the prestige and glory, which leads to more money and credit, while the others who don’t or didn’t cheat, and don’t have the bombastic exaggerated numbers, are barely existent, or credited. You would wonder who would win and gain the credit, or perform the best, if the field were leveled and noone truly cheated or used PED’s.

It is like that in the fitness industry and bodybuilding/figure world. There is no doubt that the fitness world is a good thing- it produces good habits, active living, inspiring others to exercise, and champion caliber athletes who inspire others to be the best they can be. But you have to wonder, much like with other sports, if deception is the accurate depiction to spread this message.

Back in the early 1900s, while bodybuilding was still in its’ infant stages, you rarely saw overly-enhanced bodies that appeared too good to be real. But in the same sense, that is why they were better-they were natural and more aesthetic. You could tell the people who graced covers and magazines really earned their results through pure dedication, hard work, and natural strategies. This was bodybuilding and fitness at its’ finest, in pure form, and probably more inspirational and for the better as a result.

You could go as far as to say it’s a lot of false advertising, and you would probably be mostly right- those bodies aren’t the way they are by anything natural, probably not the supplements they’re promoting, and no, you definitely have no shot of obtaining a physique like that even if you spent hours a day and years in the gym- unless you took steroids or drugs.
